RS: It has a real 70s feel to it, yet it definitely fore—and post—shadows the punk movement. Was that the intention?
Daddyo: Yeah, you gotta be careful what you wish for. Now I'm gonna have to play some of this shit forever
RS: You don't like it?
Daddyo: Pop is temporary. It has its moment, and then the moment is gone. I always wanted this, but it comes with a price. After a while, it'll just remind me where I was. It'll just remind me of something that's gone. Then what'll I do?
RS: Retire?
Daddyo: Yeah, to the festival and State Fair circuit—like in Spinal Tap. I hate playing during daylight. Rock and Roll is a nighttime music. It's like vampire music. It needs to be played at night. It needs to wrestle out of its clothes in the backseat of a car with Eddie Cochran blaring on the radio. It's like Jagger wrote in Rocks Off, "The sunshine bores the daylights out of me."
RS: Valium is definitely a night time song.
Daddyo: I had just seen Woody Allen's Manhattan. It has a scene in which the Diane Keaton character chases half of a Valium with a glass of brown, rusty water. It just struck me as wrong. You gotta chase downers with alcohol.
Valium
I was standing outside considering time
While a mighty breeze blew through the trees
I was lost in a thought when it occurred to me
Always chase Valium with alcohol
It's not so bad when taken as a whole
Although we're all victims of impermanence
Just keep your eyes off the ground and do one thing
Always chase Valium with alcohol
You can't trust the water
You can't trust the air
You can't forgive yourself for going nowhere
The biting wind and
The frigid sea
Mock every thought you've ever conceived
I knew my fate when I found myself
Mesmerized by the sound of a word
Remember this despite your legend and wealth
Always chase Valium with alcohol
While a mighty breeze blew through the trees
I was lost in a thought when it occurred to me
Always chase Valium with alcohol
It's not so bad when taken as a whole
Although we're all victims of impermanence
Just keep your eyes off the ground and do one thing
Always chase Valium with alcohol
You can't trust the water
You can't trust the air
You can't forgive yourself for going nowhere
The biting wind and
The frigid sea
Mock every thought you've ever conceived
I knew my fate when I found myself
Mesmerized by the sound of a word
Remember this despite your legend and wealth
Always chase Valium with alcohol
